There is something magical about secret gardens in your backyard, isn’t there? A beautiful, tranquil oasis, hidden from prying eyes and a perfect spot to escape the mundane. It sounds wonderful really.

Well, the best thing is that you, too, can have your own secret magical garden. How, you’re wondering? Stick around for a bit and we’ll share the secret with you.

Let’s see, how to create a secret magical backyard garden.

1.      Choose a location

The perfect location for a secret garden is usually a secluded spot in your backyard. For example, under a tree, next to a wall, right at the end of your backyard, or really any place in your backyard that calls to you.

The most important thing is to make sure that this area is private and isolated from the rest of the backyard, if it’s not, you’ll have to work on that a bit more. More on the privacy, further down.

2.      Create a secret entryway

Every secret garden needs a special kind of gate or entryway – something that will visually separate this secret space from the rest of your backyard. A portal to wonderland, if you will.

There are many great ideas when it comes to creating a special entryway to a magical haven in your backyard. Arches with lush greenery, beautiful arbors, columns, actual gates, anything that will indicate that the space beyond is special and magical.

3.      Create a sense of privacy

As we mentioned, since the goal is to make this place secret, privacy is a must. If you don’t already have natural seclusion in that area, make your own.

Use landscaping to create a sense of privacy in your secret garden. Plant shrubs, bushes, and bamboo along the edge of your secret garden. If there are trees in that area, make sure you make use of them as well.

You can also make good use of wrought iron or wooden screens, fake walls, or whatever comes to your mind that can separate your magical garden from the rest of the backyard. The key is to enclose this space and make it completely hidden and thus, private.

4.      Add curved pathways

A secret garden wouldn’t be secret if it didn’t have a bit of mystery to it. You can provide mysterious vibes with curved pathways. Not just in the garden but also make the path that leads to your secret garden curvy and wavy. This will not only  give a mysterious feel to it, but it will also add interest.

Along the pathway, you can install interesting solar yard lights that will light the path at night. This is yet another way to add to the mystery and it’s pretty practical, too. You don’t need electricity to light your way toward the secret garden.

5.      Create a secret garden destination

In every secret garden, the destination is usually a place to sit and relax. A place to enjoy your secret garden.

You can simply add a bench and a small table, or you can go all out and make a whole little oasis by adding garden furniture and a sun umbrella or some sort of cover.

You can even go a step further and add a bit of romance to your magical secret garden by adding lighting. This brings us to our next step.

6.      Add lighting

Lighting can truly transform any space – including your secret garden. That’s why you should consider bringing garden lanterns, LED lights, solar lights, or candles to your secret garden.

Even small fairy lights can go a long way. With lighting, you will not only set the atmosphere but you’ll make your secret garden look wonderful even at night.

7.      Decorate your secret garden

Don’t forget to add some interest and magic to your magical garden. In addition to dreamy lighting, you can also add decorative objects to it as well. Consider installing a water feature or a fire pit if you have space.

An interesting rock, a bench, a birdhouse, or simply any other decorative object that you think would look nice in your secret garden. Don’t be afraid to experiment – your secret garden is a perfect place to do whatever you want and make it as magical as it can be.

Creating a secret magical garden may seem like a lot of work, but in the end, it will be the greatest thing you’ve ever made. What better way to make use of your backyard than to create a secret garden?
